چکیده

Carnivorous sponges (family Cladorhizidae) lack the aquiferous system and choanocytes and, therefore, their reproduction in particular spermatogenesis is unusual for Porifera. We studied a carnivorous sponge Lycopodina hypogea using confocal microscopy, SEM TEM. In brief, L. proceeds as follows. Male cells derive from archaeocyte-like cells. During its first divisions, spermatogonia are surrounded by thin follicle made up single cell. The divide mitotically, giving rise to next generation of spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes secondary spermatocytes. Spermatozoa long narrow mono-flagellated cells, tightly packed inside spermatic cyst. They sponges, being dart-shaped, with an anterior filament, which electron-dense, rod-like outgrowth terminating acrosome. flagellum long, proximal region located within cytoplasmic tunnel. course spermiogenesis, envelope several intertwined pseudopodia formed around unicellular envelope. Symbiotic bacteria usually present between sperm maturation, cyst, may be called spermatophore, migrates body filaments acquires two bundles forceps spicules. Mature spermatophores released filaments. To sum up, we showed that fertilization strikingly different these processes other sponges. differences mostly concern origin male germ structure mature spermatozoa formation spermatophores.

Cell death and renewal during prey capture and digestion in the carnivorous sponge Asbestopluma hypogea (Porifera: Poecilosclerida).

The sponge Asbestopluma hypogea is unusual among sponges due to its peculiar carnivorous feeding habit. During various stages of its nutrition cycle, the sponge is subjected to spectacular morphological modifications. Starved animals are characterized by many elongated filaments, which are crucial for the capture of prey. After capture, and during the digestion process, these filaments actively...

Kinetics and rhythm of body contractions in the sponge Tethya wilhelma (Porifera: Demospongiae).

Sponges of the species Tethya wilhelma display rhythmic body contractions, which were analyzed by digital timelapse imaging and semi-automated image analysis. For the first time, differential, quantitative data on sponge behaviour could be obtained. The sponges are able to reduce their body volume by up to 73.3% during regular contractions. Each contraction cycle follows a characteristic patter...

Transcriptome Changes during the Life Cycle of the Red Sponge, Mycale phyllophila (Porifera, Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida)

Sponges are an ancient metazoan group with broad ecological, evolutionary, and biotechnological importance. As in other marine invertebrates with a biphasic life cycle, the developing sponge undergoes a significant morphological, physiological, and ecological transformation during settlement and metamorphosis. In this study, we compare new transcriptome datasets for three life cycle stages of t...

Decapod Crustaceans associated with the sponge Sarcotragus muscarum Schmidt, 1864 (Porifera: Demospongiae) from the Levantine coasts of Turkey

The present study was carried out to determine the Decapod Crustaceans fauna in association with Sarcotragus muscarum Schmidt, 1864 from the Levantine Sea coasts of Turkey studied between 13 September 2005 and 07 October 2005. As a result of the present study, a total of 711 specimens belonging to 12 decapod species were identified. Among the species determined, Synalpheus gambaroloides (Nardo,...

Evaluation of microbiological accumulation capability of the commercial sponge Spongia officinalis var. adriatica (Schmidt) (Porifera, Demospongiae).

This study was carried out to evaluate the microbiological accumulation capability of the demosponge Spongia officinalis var. adriatica. Six microbiological parameters were researched in two sampling periods in the water and in reared sponge samples coming from sites with different degrees of microbial contamination: an off-shore fish farm displaced off the Apulian coast (Southern Adriatic Sea)...
